Mouth Guards in Beaverton

Custom Mouth Guards to Protect from Teeth Grinding and More!

What are Mouth Guards?

Mouth guards are coverings worn over your teeth, often used to protect from injury. These injuries are frequently caused from either participation in sports, such as football, or from grinding of the teeth. It is common for people to grind their teeth while sleeping, causing them to sleep with a mouth guard in overnight.

There are three types of mouth guards:

  • Stock: These mouth protectors are inexpensive and can often be found at sporting goods stores. When purchased, stock mouth guards are preformed and ready to wear.
  • Boil and bite: This style of mouth guard is also available at sporting goods stores, however, might offer a better fit to your mouth since it is shaped to your teeth. They are often made of a thermoplastic material and boiled with water until softened. The mouth guard is then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth with both fingers and tongue.
  • Custom-fitted: These mouth guards may be the most expensive, but they do provide the most comfort and protection as they are individually designed and made in a dental office to fit your mouth. The dentist first makes an impression of your teeth and then molds a mouth guard over the model.

Here at Eubanks Family Dental, we create custom mouth guards to provide the most comfortable fit and best protection for our patients. Feel free to make an appointment today if you think that a custom-fitted mouth guard is a good option for you.

Who Should Use a Mouth Guard?

Both adults and children can use a mouth guard to protect their teeth. Accidents, such as teeth breaking, nerve damages, or even tooth loss, can happen during any physical activity. It is important to use a mouth guard to help protect from these situations. Those who have an issue with grinding their teeth at night could have a nocturnal bite plate to prevent tooth damage.

How to Take Care of a Mouth Guard

  • Rinse with cold water before and after each use, or with mild soap and a toothbrush
  • Store and transport in a firm, perforated container
  • Protect from high temperatures to reduce distortion of shape
  • Bring with you to each scheduled dental visit to have your dentist exam it
