What is Restorative Dental Care?

Often confused with cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry is a term which dental professionals use to explain how they replace missing or damaged teeth. While cosmetic dentistry focuses on attaining results to achieve an individual’s idea of a perfect smile, restorative dentistry focuses more on the result of functioning teeth. One can lose a tooth, or parts of a tooth, due to decay, deterioration of a previously placed restoration, or a fracture of a tooth, causing a tooth restoration to take place.

Different Procedures for a Restoration

There are a few different devices restorative dentists can use to restore teeth. Here are some examples:

  • Fillings: As you may have heard of fillings, they are the most common type of dental restoration and are used to fill cavities. Gold, silver amalgam, or tooth-colored plastic materials can all be used to fill teeth to prevent further decay.
  • Crowns: To hold a bridge in place, cover a dental implant, or restore the shape, size, strength, and appearance of a tooth, a crown can be used. Crowns are the shape of your tooth and are placed over them like a cap to strengthen and protect.
  • Bridges: When one or more teeth are missing, a bridge, or a false tooth, is designed to “bridge” the gap. Bridges can be both cemented permanently into place and anchored by crowns on either side of the tooth.
  • Implants: An implant takes place when the actual tooth roots are being replaced. In the area of a missing tooth, a small post made of metal is placed into the bone socket. The implant is then covered with a replacement tooth, or crown.
  • Dentures: For missing teeth, dentures are a removable replacement. There are two types of dentures; partial and complete. Complete dentures are used when all teeth in the mouth need replaced, while partial dentures are considered when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. Dentures are made of acrylic resin and are sometimes combined with metal attachments.
